Creative Bug

As those of you who know me may have noticed, I get into things and become slightly obsessed and then move on when something else interests me.  Right now, it's being creative.  Last weekend a friend had a big birthday party and took us all to this awesome place called Make.  It's huge, with various stations that let you create anything from jewelry to soap.  I decided to make a candle, which consisted of picking out colorful squares, placing them in a tin and then watching as the workers mixed the scent I chose with hot wax and pouring it over my squares.  The end result is pretty stinkin awesome...

Then this week I began brainstorming about what I could do with all my jewelry.  For years now, since I started traveling, it has all been kept in a pretty great travel bag.  But now that I have a real space to occupy I wanted to get it all out and more user-friendly.  The stores I went to didn't have anything that seemed like a good idea, so finally I picked out a simple, $3 chain at a craft store.  It is the color of my drawer pulls, so I hoped since it matched I could figure something out.

Well figure something out I did!!  Check out how cute my jewelry looks now...and I can actually see it all, which will make mornings a heck of a lot more fun.

Now I'm in New York New York New York!

Since the end of October I have been living out of a suitcase.  Thank God for all the unbelievably amazing friends and family members I have or I'm not sure how I would have survived this long transition.  I don't even know how to thank all the people that supported me through this time by letting my into their home for up to a month at a time!  I shall start by listing them here....

Thank you Mom, Amy, Maggie, Melissa, Christi, Phil, Shawn, Thomas, Dan, Alicia, Noelle, Peter, Lily, Juliet, Colin and Jim.  Very seriously it took all of you to get me where I am, so thank you from the bottom of my heart.  I am still coming up with some way to pay it forward...more ideas on that to come.  Thanks to many others for emotional support too...I have felt so very blessed by how supported and loved I am, you are all so special to me.

As of this weekend, I am an official NYC resident.  I moved into an area called Hudson Heights, which is the nicer end of Washington Heights right near the GW bridge.  My apartment is a two bedroom and my roomie is a PhD student.  In a world where the internet has become a bit of a dark thing...I can say that I owe pretty much everything I know in my world to craigslist.  I found the job on ships there, I found my apartment in Austin there and I found this apartment on there.  I also found a great place in Jersey to park my car so that it's closer to me but not in the city...cars and NYC don't get along well.  So thank you to craigslist too!!

I simply couldn't be happier.  I never thought I would actually get to call NYC home, and yet here I sit, on my nice comfy bed, listening to the sounds of cars on the bridge, writing to you all from high above the big apple. Each morning I make my way to work on the subway and marvel at the fact that I am now one of those people.  It's incredible.

I'm still unpacking and rearranging and accumulating various pieces of furniture; but I'm home.  I can't wait to watch the weather warm up and begin having visitors!!  I have a bike here too, so I get to start riding down the Riverside park and looking over the Hudson.  Hey, I may even get to kayak here!  As soon as I unpack my battery chargers I will get pictures taken.  Until then...there's a video on my facebook for those of you who are friends with me :)

Enjoy!
